The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second rate cut in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Changes
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually studies BLS data to assess employment trends, including the count of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs added to the market in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated recently, a trend he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Shows Moderate Rise
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the peak since January. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is two percent.
